dud ... a multimedia improvised art ensemble.
What is dud?

dud is an improvised art ensemble, comprised of musicians, dancers, visual and other artists, that creates live multimedia performances.

dud began in 2003 as an experiment in spontaneous collaborative composition. Genres, instruments, grooves, textures and techniques were freely mixed and matched, generating ever-changing musical terrains. Vocal contributions were encouraged from all, including stories, songs, rants, and discussions. Headphones for all participants and predominantly electronic instrumentation allowed precise monitoring and control of the unfolding soundscape.

dud's open and non-judgmental process encourages experimentation and exploration. The group has extended into the multimedia realm, adding video artists, dancers, projections, lighting and other live theatrical elements. A wide range of performance situations, including concerts, parties, political events, galleries, theatre, radio and television shows, and live film accompaniment have offered additional challenges and intrigue. This artistic exploration and stretching are integral to the dud experience.

Multitrack audio and video recordings are made at most performances. Some of this material is edited in the studio to create CDs/DVDs and/ or web-based content that offers a different view of the dud process. Click on any of the sample images below and you'll be taken to a page that lets you see the videos and hear the music. dud is always under development, continually seeking new collaborators and situations in which to apply the process.
